GETTING STARTED:

Whether you know a bit of sign language, you are fluent in ASL, or you are not even sure what signing with babies is all about - our getting started tips, along with our edutainment DVD will give you a great start to communicate with your child using sign language.

QUICK TIPS:

  • Start with feeding signs, top 4 signs: Milk, Eat, More, Finished
  • Start sign language with infants between 4-12 months of age.
  • 12 months and up still learn sign easily, and will produce the signs at a faster rate.
  • Don’t force it. If baby is not in the mood right now, come back to it later.
  • Be consistent and repetitive.
  • Watch the MIMIC ME DVD together (of course)
  • Show enthusiasm and confirmation when they try signing to you.
  • Pay attention - their first variation of the sign will look a bit different.
  • If your baby is hearing, always speak and sign together.
  • Buy, borrow, or rent a video camera. When they do start signing back to you… its touching and amazing!

Signing shouldn’t be an added task, begin using signs as an integrated part of your parenting repertoire. Seize the moments when feeding, bathing, putting their little socks on to use these “teachable moments” to show them the word in sign. At 9 months my daughter spontaniously signed “LOVE” to me, and I cried with joy.
